The leaves are pinnately veined and have a serrate margin. The fruits are leathery, glossy brown nuts. Usually there are three together in a yellow-brown, thorny, rather large fruit cup (cupola). These open with four valves. The spines are a kind of defense weapon against the premature attack by birds and squirrels.
